I ordered the standard kit for the GPS V from CycoActive. This kit included a U-bolt for a handlebar (but no base that could be bolted directly to the frame). It also included the cradle, the diamond-shaped part with a ball (to attach to the back of the cradle), and a standard 3 inch arm (measured ball center to ball center). Because I didn't want to use the U-bolt mount, I also ordered a ball mounted on a small base that was bent at a 45 degree angle.

The reason that I ordered the angle mount is that I thought it would help to clear the handlebar, but it turned out not to help there and a 1/2" spacer was still needed. But because the "stem" for the ball was not vertical and met the ball sort at the side of the ball, it interfered with the placement and positioning of the arm, compromising the "Z configuration" in particular. Additionally, the 3-inch arm turned out to be a little longer than ideal for the limited space: no matter what I tried, the GPS V always obscured...

Any automotive GPS worth its salt will come packaged with some sort of suction cup mount that will let users stick it to a vehicle's windshield. For most users, this is where road ends where GPS device mounting is concerned. But is this the best way to keep your navigation device in place while you drive? And what about that weird plastic disk that was also in the box? Let's take a look at the pros and cons of the different GPS mounting options.

Pay attention, because what you learn here can also be applied to mounting your GPS-enabled smartphone.

Windshield suction mount
The suction cup mount is typically the mount of choice for GPS units, because it comes packaged with the device. For most vehicles, the windshield suction mount places the GPS device within the driver's peripheral vision, keeps the speaker close to the driver's head for better hearing of spoken directions, and also places the touch screen within an arm's reach.

However, care must be...

Below are some of the telescopes I've used in recent years, ranging from ~30 -3000 dollars. (shortened for YTs character limits)

Price $35
76mm reflector dobsonian mounted (Celestron Firstscope)
Weight ~ 1kg (a couple of pounds)
Setup time ~0
East of Transport 1
Short focal length- wide angle field of view. Finder not really necessary.
Ultra cheap, good views of Moon, Jupiter Venus, rings of Saturn, bright, wide separation double stars, and brighter deep sky objects such as M13. I was not particularly impressed with the optics on mine, but for 35 bucks, you cant complain too much!

Price $200
90mm Maksutov-Cassegrain, dobsonian mount (Orion Apex)
Weight ~ 1kg (a couple of pounds)
Setup time ~0
East of Transport 1
Longer focal length means smaller field of view for comparable eye pieces. I was impressed with this scope on the planets. It vastly outperforms the Firstscope on optics. The scope comes off the...

Work Horse Cradle

Posted by Paul on 12th Dec 2016

This is a well thought-out cradle that stands up to daily (ab)use. I have used this same model everyday for the past 3 years in my MINI Countryman. So good that I ordered the same one for my recently purchased MINI JCW GP2. Good design; well engineered and able to securely cradle different smart phone models and sizes. It has never disappointed.

Looks great, works great

Posted by Kathy on 22nd Nov 2016

I initially bought a different brand phone mount because I didn't want to have to remove the tach. The other clip, however, seemed like it was going to break the display in my MINI, so I returned it and bought the CravenSpeed mount. It was REALLY easy to remove the tach and install the mount. It works perfectly and holds my phone steady, easily viewable, while not blocking my view of the road. So glad I purchased...

a nice GPS receiver, but very fragile wires

by Member #484252 verified purchaser

A good GPS at a good price.

The TinyGPS++ library works great with this.

My major problem was the JST connector. I needed to put on a different connector and ended up destroying 2 of 3 receivers when stripping the wire for the new connector. The pad on the circuit board just ripped off. (So be very very very careful.)

It takes a short period to acquire satellites and get valid data.

Also note that you should use the SmartSerial driver and the smartDelay code from TinyGPS+++ so that you don’t get checksum errors and buffer overflows. (This showed up for me as no long/lat/altitude - even though I got valid time data.)

Starting at the Black Mountain Campground on the Toe River, this hike gains 3600' in elevation over 5 1/2 miles to reach the summit of the East's highest peak, making it one of the toughest continuous climbs in the region, near the limit of what most people will want to tackle in a day hike. You'll enjoy a varied forest that changes with the elevation. Much of the forest is old-growth, and you'll pass through stands of Red Spruce that help explain why this tree was such a valued resource. And, of course, there are spectacular views from high up.
