Take steps to set your body up for the spike.

The spike hit in volleyball is the hit that sends the ball over the net to the other team. You need to take steps to get your body in the correct position and to get the energy to achieve a good spike. You can take 3 steps or 4 steps to make the spike, but the conventional approach is to take 4 steps.

The basic rules of volleyball are well-known in terms of legal and illegal hits. However, there are special situations that have led to the creation of new rules to define what is and is not an acceptable hit. Volleyball rules are promulgated by the Federation Internationale de Volleyball on the international level and the NCAA, USA Volleyball and the National Federation of High School Associations in America. The rules are essentially the same on the high school, college and international levels.

You can't catch or hold the ball in regulation volleyball. To insure that the ball is not held for a split second on scoop shots, you can't use open palms beneath the ball to hit it. You can't throw the ball either. Double hits are an example of a special situation. Double hits are legal only on a team's first contact, such as digging out a serve, but illegal on subsequent hits.

Hits can be legal or illegal, depending...

Definition Of A Volleyball Dig

The Dig, The Dive, The Double Hit Are Examples of Basic Volleyball Dig Terms

For volleyball defense, you can get closer to accomplishing your goal of

becoming an effective libero or a back row specialist by

studying this terminology that describes aspects of the defensive part

of the game.

In defense, your team's primary objective, once the ball gets

past the blockers playing in the front row is for your back row players

to keep the ball off of the floor.

To do that successfully, the coach, based on the scouting report she or

he has on the opposing team, will choose specific blocking patterns and

defensive strategies for the players on her/his team to implement in

order to try and stop the opposing team from spiking or successfully

hitting the ball into their court for points.

The ways to score points are...

For a referee to indicate a line violation, the left hand needs to be slightly extended, and it needs to point downward. The illegal hit signal is shown by raising the right hand up in a slower motion. Other hand signals in volleyball include illegal alignment or improper serve, delay of service, over the net, net foul or serve, legal back row attack, illegal block, illegal attack of serve, "ball touched," four hits, double hits, ball landing inbounds, out of bounds violation, begin serve, authorization to enter, point, re-serve, illegal substitution, team time out, official time out, unnecessary delay and change of courts.

To make a delay of service signal, referees hold one palm up in the air at a 90-degree angle. An illegal block signal requires both hands to be raised in the same manner. A double hit call is similar to delay of service, but two fingers are held up as opposed to a palm.

Double hits in volleyball are often judgement calls by the referees, as the action happens so fast it's hard to detect with certainty. The double hit rules, as set by USA Volleyball, determine instances when a double hit is allowed and when it's not acceptable, but the final call happens on the court when the referee watches the action.

Double Hit Definition

A double hit occurs when a player touches the ball with more than one body part while trying to hit the ball. This is often the shoulder, upper arm or upper body, where the contact is nearly simultaneous with the player's hands hitting the ball. The ball could also bounce off a player's body part, such as her knee, before she hits with her hands. The secondary body contact is usually accidental, but it's still not allowed in most cases.

Unacceptable Double Hits

Double hits are not allowed during basic play, such as when a player is returning a ball or setting it in the air for another player to...

Junior opposite Ben Patch has been named the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I-II Player of the Week, the association announced Tuesday.

Patch led No. 4 BYU men’s volleyball to a series sweep against then-league leading No. 2 UCLA last week.

In a five-set thriller on Friday, he led both teams with a season-high 28 kills, more than double the amount of any other player on the court. He also hit at a .422 clip, had three blocks and added a career-high-tying 11 digs (also the most for either team) for just his second career double-double.

Then, in a sweep on Saturday, Patch had a match-high 13 kills while adding four digs, just one shy of the match high. On the week, he collected 5.13 kills per set on a .435 clip, while adding 1.88 digs per set.

This is Patch's first AVCA weekly honor of the season and fourth of his career. He was also named the MPSF Player of the Week and the FloVolleyball Player of the Week on Monday...

This rules of volleyball page explains one commonly mistaken rule - double contact on volleyball setting.

Case: Double Contact on Setting

One junior volleyball player sent us a question about the double hit. She had been called for the double contact when setting the ball (on the second contact).

Referee told her "there was too much spin on the ball". This player went and examined the rule book and was confused because she didn't find anything about the spin on it.

Basic Rules of Volleyball - Double Contact - Bad Call or Good Call?

This was absolutely a false call from a referee.

(It is quite common that referees incorrectly call off the set, when there is too much spin on it.)

There is no rule in indoor volleyball about the "spin on the ball."

What referee should call?

"Setter has committed to a double contact only, if setter's hands do not touch the ball simultaneously."

Normally, if a player touches the ball with two different parts of the body in succession (not simultaneously), it is a Double Contact fault. However, the block and the first team hit are exceptions to this. During the block and during the first hit, a player can contact the ball more than once, as long as the contacts are all part of one action.

From FIVB Official Volleyball Rules 2013-2016:

9.2.3 The ball may touch various parts of the body, provided that the contacts take place simultaneously.
Exceptions: at blocking, consecutive contacts may be made by one or more player(s), provided that the contacts occur during one action; at the first hit of the team, the ball may contact various parts of the body consecutively, provided that the contacts occur during one ...

The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. The team may touch the ball up to 3 times but individual players may not touch the ball twice consecutively. Typically, the first two touches are used to set up for an attack, an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.

There are 4 basic rules in volleyball you would be crazy not to learn.

1. Double contact on the first team hit

It is legal to make multiple contacts on the ball during the first team contact. The contact must be a single attempt at playing the ball to be legal.

If the ball is played twice in succession, it is an illegal 2 hits.

On second and third team contacts, double hits (or multiple contacts) are illegal.

Understanding the rules of volleyball for contacts is very important to having a competitive advantage over your opponent.

Playing Tip
Teach your players to be more aggressive when taking the ball with their hands.

Playing Tip
Players can train themselves to intentionally take the serve and free balls with their hands without worry of being called for mishandling the ball.

Playing Tip
Coaches can make volleyball drills that train players to take the ball with their hands on the first team...

Team will rotate, switch positions clockwise every time they "side-out", win the rally after opponents serve.

When the receiving team has won the rally and got the right to serve, the team rotates clockwise: a player from position 2 moves to serve to position 1, the player from the position 1 moves to position 6, etc. etc.

How to Count the hits

Three hits per team is allowed to deliver the ball to the other side Player is not allowed to hit the ball twice in a row. (Expection: a block is not a hit, which means after the block, the player is allowed to play the...
