Leo Messi has won his fifth golden ball. The gala was held in Zurich on 12 January. Messi was already the player with more golden balls of history, with 4, so this award places him further away from his pursuers. The only player with 3 golden balls is Cristiano Ronaldo, honor he shares with Marco Van Basten, Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini.

No player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or since 2008. Since 2007, Leo Messi has won 5 Golden Balls, 3 Silver Balls and 1 Bronze Ball. Since 2007, Cristiano Ronaldo has won 3 Golden Balls and 5 Silver Balls. Kaka was the last player to win the Golden Ball before the Messi-Ronaldo era started.

In this section we compare the individual achievements of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, to see which one was most successful throughout his career.

FIFA has awarded Golden Ball to Lionel Messi, which in my opinion is embarrassing Javier Macherano, Arjen Robben, Mats Hummels and James Rodriguez were far better than Messi.

FIFA has announced shortlist for 2014 world cup awards such as Golden Ball Award, Best Young Player and Golden Gloves award. Four German players has been included in the shortlist for Golden Ball Award (Best Player of 2014 world cup) While three Argentina players has made the list. While Neymar is also shortlisted for the most prestigious world cup indvidual honour.

After the world cup final, FIFA technical group will be announcing the awards in the same night along with Golden Boot winner. in 2010 Wesley Snieder won the Golden Ball award and this year its a tough choice between Muller, Robben, Messi and Rodriguez.

The U.S. Women’s National Team beat Japan 5-2 and Carli Lloyd was given several awards, including the highly coveted golden ball!

The United States Women’s National Soccer Team won the FIFA Women’s World Cup July 5 and it was thanks to all the unbelievable women on the team! Several awards were handed out after the big win. Hope Solo was awarded the golden glove award and Carli Lloyd took home the silver boot and the golden ball!

Carli, 32, led her team to victory by scoring two amazing goals for the United States in the first five minutes. She went on to score one more goal making it a total of three goals which is known as a “hat trick” — that’s soccer lingo folks. It’s been 16 years since the U.S. won the World Cup and what a sweet victory it was for our country! Lauren Holiday scored the third goal and then Carli came back with a goal from halfway down the field! We told you that Carli is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and she scored the winning goals in...

- Rodriguez thanks teammates after winning Golden Boot

There was a global outcry from media and fans after Messi, 27, was given the award following the defeat of his Argentina side to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final in which the Barcelona star had failed to live up to expectations.

Previously the result of a poll between the world's press and FIFA's Technical Study Group, Messi's surprise win was the consequence of analysis by the latter body solely after football's world governing body changed the voting process for the tournament in Brazil.

Even FIFA president Sepp Blatter admitted he was surprised by the decision, which led to fans...

At the end of each FIFA World Cup final tournament, several awards are attributed to the players and teams which have distinguished from the rest, in different aspects of the game.

There are currently five post-tournament awards, and one given during the tourney:[1]

the Golden Ball (currently commercially termed "adidas Golden Ball") for best player, first awarded in 1982; the Golden Boot (currently commercially termed "adidas Golden Boot", previously known as the "adidas Golden Shoe" from 1982 to 2006) for top goal scorer, first awarded in 1982; the Golden Glove Award (currently commercially termed "adidas Golden Glove"; previously known as the "Lev Yashin Award" from 1994 to 2006) for best goalkeeper, first awarded in 1994; the Best Young Player (currently commercially termed as "Hyundai Best Young Player") award for best player under 21 years of age at the start of the calendar year, first awarded in 2006; the FIFA Fair Play Trophy for the team that advanced to the...

Football (or soccer for North Americans and Australians) holds a World Cup every four years. Sadly, my own national team, Northern Ireland, hasn’t reached the finals since 1982, and despite the recent goal-scoring feats of David Healy, doesn’t look like doing so anytime soon.

Tears aside, here’s the first in a series of posts featuring sport logos, this time showcasing World Cup logos from Brazil in 1950 to South Africa in 2010. I’ve added a little trivia for the football buffs.

Brazil 1950 logo

The 1950 World Cup was the first to include British participants. British teams withdrew from FIFA in 1920, partly out of unwillingness to play against the countries they had been at war with, and partly as a protest against a foreign influence on football.

FINAL SCORE: Uruguay 2-1 Brazil (there was no actual final this year, and the tournament was decided by a round-robin between four teams, with this match considered the decisive result to crown...

105 games, 67 goals

"The Phenomenon" is arguably the greatest finisher in the modern game. Check out the video for his trademark goal celebration with outstretched arms similar to the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in his native Rio de Janeiro. Who can also forget his famous buck-toothed smile?

At only 17, Ronaldo made the Brazilian squad that won in 1994. He did not play in the tournament, but gained valuable experience in the big-time.

He scored both goals as Brazil gunned down Germany in the final of 2002 and won the Golden Boot award as top goalscorer with eight goals. This made up for the bitter disappointment of 1998, when a clearly unfit Ronaldo was a shadow of his normal self against France in the final. It was later revealed that Ronaldo had suffered convulsions on the eve of the match in Paris.

During the 2006 World Cup, Ronaldo became the highest goalscorer in World Cup history with 15 goals, surpassing Gerd Mueller's record of 14 for West...

Alan Hansen: "I am distraught, I have been watching football for 50 years, and this is a low point. To come to Brazil and watch this."

Alan Shearer: "I genuinely worry whether some of these players will recover from this."

Henry Winter's match report: "This was an embarrassment to a famous shirt, a point their furious supporters made splenetically."

Paul Hayward: "The indignity of this night will haunt Brazilian football for generations."

Let's grab some of your views: Dave Stults, you have the honour:

This World Cup has been full of so many shocking moments! If someone would have told me what would have happened in the Group Stages,Costa Rica's triumph, with Suarez, Neymar's injury, and now this catastrophe I wouldn't have believed it! Not for one second! What I don't understand is how Brazilian players could let this happen to them in Brazil! This surely must be the worst moment in Brazilian sport's history.
