Swimming is an individual or team sport and activity. Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. In addition to these individual events, Olympic swimmers also take part in relays. Swimmers can also compete in open-water events (e.g., in a sea or lake).

History[edit]

Evidence of recreational swimming in prehistoric times has been found, with the earliest evidence dating to Stone Age paintings from around 10000 years ago. Written references date from 2000 BC, with some of the earliest references to swimming including the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible, Beowulf, the Quran and others. In 1538, Nikolaus Wynmann, a German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book, The Swimmer or A Dialogue on...

A front crawl swimmer

Swimming is movement by humans or animals in water, usually without artificial assistance. Swimming is an activity that is both useful and recreational for many species. Its primary uses are bathing, cooling, travel, fishing and escape. An individual's ability to swim can be judged by speed or stamina.

Animals with lungs have an easier time floating than those without. Almost all mammals can swim by instinct. Bats, kangaroos, moles and sloths can swim, despite their rather strange shapes. The few exceptions include apes and possibly giraffes. Land birds can swim or float for at least some time. Ostriches, cassowaries and tortoises can swim.

History

Drawings from the Stone Age were found in "the cave of swimmers" near Sura, dating back to 2000 B.C.There is evidence that swimming was also a very popular sport in Greece and Italy in the original...

Infant swimming lessons help your child get comfortable in the water. The lessons also provide a sensory activity and help the young participants practice their physical development skills. Children aren't typically ready to learn swimming skills until around 4 years old, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The organization supports swimming lessons for younger kids, but they shouldn't be considered a way to reduce the risk of drowning.

Blowing bubbles is a basic activity for infant swimming lessons that is entertaining for the young participants. Blowing bubbles serves more than one purpose. It helps the infant control her breath around the water, a skill that she will need once she begins swimming on her own. The activity also helps the baby grow accustomed to having her face near the water. To help the infants learn to blow bubbles, pretend to blow out the candles on a birthday cake. An adult holding his finger so it...

Swimming metrics help you analyze each swimming session, and follow your performance and progress in the long run. When using the Swimming or Pool swimming profile, V800 records your swim distance, time and pace, strokes, and also identifies your swimming style. In addition, with the help of the SWOLF score you can keep track of your development.

The Pool swimming and Swimming profiles have the exact same functionalities (from firmware version 1.5 onwards).

Settings

Which hand do you wear V800 on?

To get the most accurate swimming metrics, it is crucial that you have set which hand you wear V800 on. If this is set incorrectly the data gathered from your swim will be flawed. Set it in V800 General Settings or in the Flow web service from Products > V800 Settings.

Pool Length

It’s important that you choose the correct pool length, as it affects pace, distance and stroke calculation, as well as your SWOLF score. The default lengths are 25...

When you're training for sport, the ideal gym exercise will include movements involved in your sport. The more alike a movement is to your sport more carry-over in training effect there will be from the gym to the sport. For this reason I like this swim kick exercise ball exercise for my scuba diving. Kicking in the water is accompanied by resistance during both the downward and upward movements, Kicking on the ball is only accompanied by resistance in the upward movement of course, due to gravity. However, a lot of the trunk muscle activity accompanying these movements is similar.

Any scuba diver will tell you that heavy kicking, say against a heavy current, can cause some back strain that you'll feel after you get back on the boat. Make sure you also add some good abdominal strengthening to your gym program.

We have talked about swimming freestyle and hand entry position, the freestyle pull pattern, and when to stop the pull or release the water, but what about the recovery. How should the swimmer's hand get from the finish of the freestyle stroke to the entry?

Master Freestyle

To avoid injury, master the freestyle.

At the end of the pull, the finish, the hand is in the water near the hip. The elbow is closer to the water's surface than the hand, and for that reason, the elbow leads the recovery. At the end of the pull, the elbow should lift up and out of the water. When that happens, the hand and forearm should exit as well, slightly behind or later than the elbow. The hand and forearm should follow a natural path out of the water, not a forced path or specific movement. When you raise the elbow, let the forearm and hand do what they want - they did the work of pulling, let them have some free time on the...

I have been swimming for as long as I can remember, but over the past 2 years when I pull myself through the water I have been getting a lot of pain in my hands, it appears just below my knuckles (towards the palm) on the palm side of my hand the pain appears in both hands after I have swam for a short while, roughly about 1/4 of a Mile.

I am pretty certain that there is very little wrong with my technique, as I have had this looked at by multiple trainers who have swam/trained and taught at a competitive level, to see if this is the problem, they said my stroke looks fine.

I have tried having a break from swimming for a few weeks to see if my hands just need time to recover/heal and I have also tried swimming more frequently to try and strengthen them up, neither has worked.

It feels like poking a bruise, but Worse and like I need to crack my knuckles.

Is there any equipment around which could possibly help me, such as swimming hand supports or anything...
