How is FIFA world cup schedule created?

There are 32 teams in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. In order to get into the tournament, teams had to participate in regional preliminary qualifying tournaments. Only Brazil, as the host country, received an automatic bid into the final tournament. (Source)

These 32 teams are organized into 8 groups of 4, labelled A through H. To decide which teams are in each group, first the top eight teams are seeded into the first position of each group. (Brazil, as the host country, is automatically seeded as team A1.) After these 8 teams are each put into separate groups, the rest of the teams are placed into the groups based on geography and random draw. (Source)

The first stage of the tournament is called the Group Stage. In this stage, each team plays the other three teams in their group. That means that each of the 32 teams plays 3 matches, for a total of 6 matches in each group, and 48 matches in the entire group stage. The Group Stage is scheduled for June 12-26,...

Whether you are a die-hard soccer nut, or just love any excuse for friendly competition, the 2014 World Cup is the perfect opportunity to organize a fun pool for your colleagues, family, and friends.

Though I can’t promise you’re going to win, get started on the right path with a World Cup Pool spreadsheet. Check out the video below to see how Frank here at Smartsheet set up our World Cup Pool, and use this prebuilt template.

Here are 4 quick tips for setting up a successful pool:

1) Decide how to run your pool

Simplify your scoring. Don’t make your scoring too complicated, or participating becomes more work than fun. The most common method for scoring is the points system, where players earn points for every successful pick. Award a lot of points. Scoring 0 each week isn’t very exciting. Keep your pool interesting by always awarding points. Avoid ties. Make sure you have a way to settle ties. For example, compare the total goals scored for...

If like some of us here, you need a handy way of keeping abreast of what games are on and when, then you’re going to want to pay attention.

With so many games being played, and with the time zone factor coming into full effect, keeping up with the schedule isn’t always easy. That’s why we’re super pleased to see that someone has done all the hard work for us by creating a shared Google Calendar that we can all hook into.

The calendar has all the fixtures for all the World Cup group games, and will even be updated when the knock-out stages start so you won’t be left trying to work out who the winner of Group B was while trying to get your head around...

In just another 3 hours, the FIFA World Cup 2014 would be underway with Brazil taking on Croatia. As the tournament progresses, it would be difficult to keep track of where the teams stand. It is always easy to see how the teams are progressing, visually, rather than read about in newspapers

!), or on digital media. The best way to

such data is, of course, a spreadsheet.

For those of us in India, the real problem is getting our minds around the timing of the matches. Once again, a spreadsheet - in Excel for most of us - is the most convenient option.

As everything seems to be getting ready just-in-time for the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil, here is my attempt to track the tournament in an Excel spreadsheet.

For today, I have typed out the schedule for the next couple of days, in a spreadsheet. But merely creating a schedule is what my 10 year old nephew would do. What I want to do is track, or update, the Excel spreadsheet as the...

It is not easy to write again after three months I didn’t write and post any templates. And, I am really sorry for not replying many comments due to my time limitation to monitor this site. But…, I am back now with my newest sport template, World Cup 2010 Schedule and Scoresheet Template. This template is the first version, because I plan to add analysis worksheet which can help you (and me of course :-)) analyzing your favourite teams before they play their matches.

This template is based on my previous Euro 2008 template. Because World Cup 2010 tournament consists of 32 teams, compare with Euro 2008 tournament which only consists of 16 teams, I made lay out modification to make the sheet fit nicely and properly if it is printed within one page A4 or letter paper size.

I am also adjusting the excel formula for deciding and ranking the teams that qualify to the next round after they played all their group matches, if two or more teams have same...
