How to improve 7 vs 7 game quality and team strategy?

I am part of a team that plays in an amateur league that also has a playoff at the end of the season. Our team is consisting of fit players that are not very tall but can run around a lot. However, not everybody can show-up to all of the games and sometimes there are some new players. The opposition teams are mostly fit and good ones.

The team is performing as seen below:

Pos. | P | W | D | L | GF | GA | PTS | YC | RC | Last 5 | 5. | 10 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 19 | 20 | 17 | 9 | 0 | W-W-W-L-D |

Our success percentage is quite low, however, considering that we are a new team we are still doing OK; we have only 2 points difference with the 2nd team. We play on a field that is quite narrow but a little long, so horizontal passes cannot be made too much, whereas vertical passing is very easy.

We play in a 3-2-1 formation:

---- Goalie ---- RB -- CB -- LB LW -------- RW -- CF --

This is a practical,...

In case you are unfamiliar with the real life rendition of quidditch, it's a 10-years-old sport that is quickly spreading globally. The most updated international rules can be found on the International Quidditch Association website, but I will provide a quick recap of the relevant rules. I am ignoring the element of play represented by Snitch and Seeker as they would only be marginally relevant to my question.

How the sport works (in 1 minute)

3 Chasers per team + 1 Keeper per team have the goal of scoring through the opponent's 3 hoops/goals with the quaffle (volleyball) and defending their own hoops. 2 Beaters per team use bludgers (dodgeballs) - of which there are 3 in total to grant that each team can have possession of 1+ bludgers - to temporarily eliminate ("beat" or "knock out") opponents. Every player must hold a broom with their hands and/or legs at all times.

How a player can be eliminated from play

In certain situations, a player can be considered...

For me every formation can be traced back to one of the two basic formations: 4-3-3 and 4-4-2. All the other formations are just another interpretation of player roles here, or just another way of setting the players (for instance, playing with a defensive midfielder instead of a attacking midfielder).

This in my opinion makes a lot more sense since a team always has to react on situations during the match. An example: Real Madrid mostly plays a almost classis 4-3-3 formation, with Marcelo as their left full-back. In the Primera Division, Real is almost always the better team, resulting in a lot of possesion, so Marcelo can stand much deeper (almost playing as a midfielder or even a winger). But when Real is playing against Barcelona, we mostly see Barca in possesion, so Marcelo has to think defensively more and thus will stand less deep than when having much possesion. You see that in this case, the formation in possesion can almost be described as being a 3-4-3 formation,...

One way is through corners and free kicks.

The central defenders are often the best headers of the ball in the team, because they need to be able to defend crosses and long balls when defending. Because of this strength, they will often take a position close to the opposition goal for corner kicks and free kicks in the opposition half, and try to score a headed goal.

An example of this was the only goal in the world cup semi-final between Germany and Spain, scored from a corner by defender Carlos Puyol.

2010 FIFA World Cup knockout stage (Germany vs Spain)

As you suggest, this can be a risky tactic, and if the corner/free-kick is defended successfully, then the defender has to try to get back in position as quickly as possible, to prevent a successful counter attack.

A manager may decide whether the risk is worth taking, depending on the score. While in the lead, he may tell defenders to stick to their positions, but while losing, he may tell the...

As a center back, we (my line mate and I) have been told to get in the wall according to how our goalkeeper directs us, square up and don't move. Both of us are 6'2" 190 lb, as is one of our center midfielders, so two of us will go in the wall while the third will hard mark one of their perimeter players if they attempt a chip-and-header. As said, though, we've been told in no uncertain terms to "don't move" as that movement makes it more difficult for our goalkeeper to read and react to the flight of the ball. I also play and umpire baseball, and the adage holds true -- if you have a weakness or a flaw or a gap, the ball will find it. Same goes for soccer -- if you jump or twist while in the wall, the ball has a way of finding that gap.

At the level of soccer we play, very few guys can rip a precision shot over or around a well-deployed wall. Some can, or could... a fair number of guys were pro or collegiate players at one time, and of them, maybe a third could do it? What...

To add to Devin's answer - sometimes professional players will also be happy with the result of a point even if they don't win the point. For example, Andre Agassi was well known for running his opponents ragged. By the 2nd or 3rd set his opponents would be so tired from Agassi's shots running them back and forth that it made it much easier for Andre to close out the match by being the fresher player at the end. His 2005 U.S. Open QuarterFinal match against James Blake is a good example of that style of play. Some players know their opponents don't have the best endurance so they will throw in more drop shots knowing they might not win the point, but the goal is more to tire out the opponent than win the point.

Generally there isn't too much advantage you can take in tennis other than perhaps serving first and getting (and maintaining) a lead. So if you are confident you can hold serve and can serve first, it is generally a good strategy. Keep in mind that tennis rules try...

Wondering how to respond to Google’s recent algorithm changes (known as Panda)?

Keep reading to find out.

A bit of history

In an interview with Wired Magazine, Udi Manber, Google’s head of search, said that Google will make as many as 550 changes to its search algorithm this year. One of the bigger changes happened this past winter in what has been called the Panda or Farmer update.

According to a report by, within days of the update, a number of very large websites saw their Google rankings take a drastic drop. Sites such as and lost 90% or more of their visibility on Google.

This Sistrix table shows the domain and the percentage loss since Google's change.

Although a 90% drop in visibility may seem extreme, it was a direct result of Google’s attempts to weed out content farms (websites with high-volume, low-quality content) and those trying to game the system. In the process, a number of...

Buy, trade, or otherwise make sure you have, a good variety of video games genres.

If you have all the racing games, how are you supposed to get better at first person shooting games? You should have one or two games in each genre. Some of the most popular genres are:

Action Adventure Racing Sims (simulations) Strategy Other genres may include Sport games, Music games, Dancing games, Singing games, MOBA's etc.

Acquire some of the most popular games.

It's also a good idea to get the most popular video games or the ones your friends have, such as:

Get familiar with the controls. How do you shoot? How do you crouch? How do you jump? How do you pause the game? You can find the controls online or in the guide that comes with the video game. You can also customise your controls in most games. After you know all of the controls, practice each of them and make sure you can execute them with ease and quickly.

Just a thought, "Struggling to move" might be in the eye of the beholder. Just because they aren't cranking out code yet, does not necessarily mean they are struggling to move. Depending on the type of project, there can be a significant amount of up front work that might make one think nothing is being accomplished (because nothing tangible has been produced) but in reality a lot of the smart work is being created that will greatly simplify things later. Is this a complicated or easy project?

However, assuming that they really are “Struggling to Move”. I have seen that when the smooth-talker developer is put in charge because the manager likes the way they talk, but the smooth-talker doesn’t really know what they are talking about. Yet, the manager doesn’t know enough to know that the smooth-talker is clueless. This is characterized by a lot of give me this rock, no I meant that rock type of activities.

I have also seen the problem when the lead is not really...

In my last article, I gave you five tips to improve your tactics. If you did your homework and practiced your tactics (either Tactics Trainer, or my Chess Genie app) you will see the benefits right away!

However, learning strategy is completely different. What is chess strategy? Unlike tactics, which is usually a one-two punch, strategy is about long-term goals. You need to think about positional factors and come up with strategic plans that sometimes extend all the way to the endgame.

I hope these five simple tips will help to improve your strategic thinking!

Check out the video version of this article below:

Tip #1: Fight for the center!

As beginners, we are told to put our pawns and pieces in the center. Yet, I see experienced players and even GMs disregard this basic advice. Just take a look at this position from the recent Battle of the Legends between Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short:

Since the launch of Dota 2 back in December 2010, we’ve been in the era of “6”. Make no mistake: it has been an incredible ride. We’ve seen the eSports scene grow and grow, and the gameplay evolve across multiple metas over time. After OG lifted the Eaglesong having won the Boston Major, it wasn’t long before Valve released the new patch – and it wasn’t the 6.89 that we were all expecting. The introduction of 7.00 was met with frenzied excitement and as the update page crashed, speculation over supposed “leaked” patch notes gathered pace. The general consensus was that the leaks couldn’t be real. Surely Valve hadn’t added talents and made “Pocket Riki” an actual thing?

Turns out, as so often is the case with anything related to Valve – that we were wrong. The 7.00 patch changes the very essence of how the game is played and so too introduces “Pocket Riki”. When Kevin ‘Purge’ Godec’s patch analysis video moves from its traditional three hour duration to a staggering nine and...

Ensuring That All Parts of Your Organization Work in Harmony

Learn how to use the 7-S Framework, with James Manktelow and Amy Carlson.

How do you go about analyzing how well your organization is positioned to achieve its intended objective?

This is a question that has been asked for many years, and there are many different answers. Some approaches look at internal factors, others look at external ones, some combine these perspectives, and others look for congruence between various aspects of the organization being studied. Ultimately, the issue comes down to which factors to study.

While some models of organizational effectiveness go in and out of fashion, one that has persisted is the McKinsey 7-S framework. Developed in the early 1980s by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, two consultants working at the McKinsey & Company consulting firm, the basic premise of the model is that there are seven internal aspects of an organization that need to be aligned...

2016 season totals, through Week 14

Revised as of 12/13/2016

This page lists DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) for total defense as well as rushing and passing defense separated. The DVOA system is explained here. All numbers below are adjusted to an average schedule of opponents and an average percentage of fumbles recovered by the defense. The exceptions are the three columns marked NON-ADJUSTED. Rushing includes all rushing, not just running backs.

LAST WEEK represents last week's rank. WEIGHTED DEFENSE is adjusted so that earlier games in the season become gradually less important. It better reflects how the team was playing at the end of the season.

VARIANCE measures the statistical variance of the team's weekly DVOA performance. Teams are ranked from most consistent (#1, lowest variance) to least consistent (#32, highest variance). SCHEDULE represents the average offensive DVOA of all opponents, with teams ranked from hardest...

Complexity describes the behaviour of a system or model whose components interact in multiple ways and follow local rules, meaning there is no reasonable higher instruction to define the various possible interactions.[1]

The stem of the word complexity i.e. Complex is composed of the Latin words com (meaning: "together") and plex (meaning: woven). This is best contrasted with Complicated where plic (meaning: folded) refers to many layers. A complex system is thereby characterised by its inter-dependencies, where as a complicated system is characterised by its layers.

Complexity is generally used to characterize something with many parts where those parts interact with each other in multiple ways, culminating in a higher order of emergence greater than the sum of its parts. Just like there is no absolute definition of "intelligence", there is no absolute definition of "complexity"; the only consensus among researchers is that there is no agreement about the specific...
