Run out on wide ball

An

umpire

signals a wide in a junior cricket match.

In the sport of cricket, a wide is one of two things:

The event of a ball being delivered by a bowler too wide or (in international cricket) high to be hit by the batsman, and ruled so by the umpire. The run scored by the batting team as a penalty to the bowling team when this occurs.

A wide does not count as one of the six balls in an over and it does not count as a ball faced by the batsman.

When a wide is bowled, one run is added to the runs scored off that ball, and is scored as extras and are added to the team's total, but are not added to any batsman's total.

A batsman cannot, by definition, be out bowled, leg before wicket, caught, or hit the ball twice off a wide, as a ball cannot be ruled as a wide if the ball strikes the batsman's bat or person. He may be out handled the ball, hit wicket, obstructing the field, run out, or stumped.

LKK 126/7 (20 Ovs)

RKW 126/7 (20 Ovs)

Match tied (Ruby Kanchi Warriors won the one-over eliminator)

Phew, I need to lie down after this. That's all from this Super-Over blessed nerve-wrangler. The TNPL is only just getting started. Many more humdingers to come. See you next time..

Indrajith: "We looked at the weather report and saw there were going to be interruptions. I thought 130 was a winning score on this wicket. We bowled well, maybe 5 runs extra, but we bowled really well. I was confident that Jesuraj is an experienced bowler. First game is very important, I'm happy that we got the momentum. We could have started better with the bat, but later on we played well."

Nilesh: "Pretty normal experience actually. I just felt that I had to stay at the wicket, let the runs come, we also had wickets left in hand. Just had one thing in mind that I had a lot of time to play the shots. Others were hurrying a bit, but I took my time. Fifty doesn't...

We witnessed some scintillating cricket today and it was a high voltage match. Do join us for the 2nd ODI at 1400 IST scheduled to be played at the same venue on 9th October. Till then, goodbye and take care!

MAN OF THE MATCH, JAKE BALL says that he was just thinking of running in and hit the deck hard at that stage. On the overall bowling in this innings, he feels that change of pace was the key. On the transition from county cricket to international cricket, he admits that it is a huge difference and the conditions were really tough. He says that they never gave hope even at 271/4 and felt that if they could take a couple of wickets, they could spring a collapse.

England captain, JOS BUTTLER feels that its been a fantastic game. Stokes pulled everyone together and batted brilliantly. Adds that Jake ball was superb on his debut. Adds that he was put under pressure by the home side but he responded really well and deserved the fifer. (On Ben Duckett) Says that he...

An Explanation of Cricket

Contents

Cricket is a team sport for two teams of eleven players each. A formal game of cricket can last anything from an afternoon to several days.

Although the game play and rules are very different, the basic concept of cricket is similar to that of baseball. Teams bat in successive innings and attempt to score runs, while the opposing team fields and attempts to bring an end to the batting team's innings. After each team has batted an equal number of innings (either one or two, depending on conditions chosen before the game), the team with the most runs wins.

(Note: In cricket-speak, the word "innings" is used for both the plural and the singular. "Inning" is a term used only in baseball.)

Cricket Ball: Hard, cork and string ball, covered with leather. A bit like a baseball (in size and hardness), but the leather covering is thicker and joined in two hemispheres, not in a tennis ball pattern. The seam is thus like an...

Last 4 OVERS

The 1st ODI will be on October 7. One has to say that this is going to be an enticing encounter. Bangladesh at home are a solid team as we all know. England are solid in all conditions, so it is hard to predict. 3 ODIs and 2 Tests make up the tour. England will know that they must adjust quickly. The good news for them is that there are only two venues, they will not be running here and there.

Bangladesh know that one way or the other they will have the sort of time that they can be looking at targeting England when it really matters. They have to rise when the big moments of the match are unfolding. One way or the other we know that it is going to get really exciting and we will have the sort of scene that Bangladesh can be looking at at least a couple of wins in their bag in the series or tour if you go by early predictions.

One has to say that there is a lot of spunk as far as Bangladesh are concerned. And watch out for them. They will look to...

2016 season totals, through Week 5

Revised as of 10/11/2016

This page lists DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) for total defense as well as rushing and passing defense separated. The DVOA system is explained here. All numbers below are adjusted to an average schedule of opponents and an average percentage of fumbles recovered by the defense. The exceptions are the three columns marked NON-ADJUSTED. Rushing includes all rushing, not just running backs.

LAST WEEK represents last week's rank. DAVE is a formula which combines our preseason projection with current DVOA to get a more accurate forecast of how a team will play the rest of the season. Right now, the preseason projection makes up 30 percent of DAVE (45 percent for teams that have had a bye week).

VARIANCE measures the statistical variance of the team's weekly DVOA performance. Teams are ranked from most consistent (#1, lowest variance) to least consistent (#32, highest variance)....
