What are wild card standings in NHL?

After the realignment, the league now consists of 2 conferences with 2 divisions in each conference. NHL playoffs consist of 16 teams fighting for the last two spots to compete in the Stanley Cup Final

The way the new playoff structure works is as follows...

The top three teams in each division will make-up the first 12 teams in the playoffs.

The remaining 4 teams (Adding up to 16 teams) will be made up by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference. Two teams per conference.

This means that the the 2 wild card spots in the Eastern Conference can consist of one of the following:

Two teams from the Atlantic Division

Two teams from the Metropolitan Division

One team from the Atlantic and one team from the Metropolitan.

The way the seeding now works is...

The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points

The division winner...

During the NHL regular season, what do you usually care most about, what do you enjoy following most:

- Personal stats of your favorite (or the best) players in the league?

- NHL Standings of your favorite teams?

Bonus option:

- Standings only if my team is fighting for WildCard spot

I expect to be in the minority here, but I find myself enjoying watching personal stats of my favorite players a lot more than I care about the standings. As a habs fan - I could care less if Montreal finishes 1st or 2nd, or by how much they finish in 1st. I do care a lot about Price's stats, and watch his sv% constantly compared to others in the league.

Pittsburgh. I'm a fan of Crosby. So long as Pittsburgh is in the playoff, I could care less if they finish 1st or 4th in their division. But I am following Crosby's points and goals totals very closely.

How about everyone else?

With more than half of the NHL’s postseason spots filled thanks to recent points by the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers, the arrival of the playoffs is as real as ever.

As are some glaring side stories, some rooted in uncertainty and others centered on inevitabilities of the league’s polarizing manner of seeding Stanley Cup contenders.

Until April 12, when the true race for a title commences, here are three things to think about:

1. It’s not a matter of if but when a top-tier contender (or two) takes an early exit

We’ve all heard the arguments for the NHL’s current playoff format, right? Promote divisional rivalries. Intensify competition. And, truthfully, the postseason is all about winning anyway, so if you can’t beat a team in the opening round, you’re not necessarily going to beat them in the conference finals.

But it’s worth remembering that one of the league’s best teams is guaranteed an early exit in the playoffs. That means even the...

Realistically, the Flyers are probably done with any chance of making the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. But the final nail can be hammered into the coffin this week with three games between now and Thursday.

None of those games are against teams directly competing with the Flyers for playoff spots, but with so many teams still in the race, any setback here will probably doom the Flyers season.

There is a chance that the Flyers could be on the verge of playoff positioning before Friday, but it’s a ridiculous long shot that is probably just about impossible.

Let’s run through what’s on deck this week, and what it all means for the hopes of spring hockey in South Philadelphia. We’re going to lean into the best-case scenario here just to show you how damn hard it’s going to be for the Flyers to pull this off.

Here’s where we stand entering this evening:

Is this finally the year for the Washington Capitals?

The squad has all of the pieces to finally break through and win its first Stanley Cup, but a recent slump and a slew of surging wild-card contenders could complicate its path through 2017 NHL Playoffs. In the Western Conference, teams like the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks all could face tough matchups with the conference being so top-heavy.

Let's take a look at the latest odds for the Stanley Cup contenders, the entirety of which can be found on OddsShark.com. Continue for a breakdown of which teams to watch for as wild-card threats.

The New York Rangers are all but locked in to the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. They sit at 93 points and six points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Metropolitan division despite having played an extra game. The Rangers are also...

If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

-In the event of a tie for the division championship or a Wild Card spot, a one-game playoff will break the tie. If three or four clubs are tied for first place in a division at the end of the regular season, and the two non-division winners would NOT be Wild Card clubs, a playoff will be played among the...
