What do you call a javelin thrower?

Like Philip Kendall said, in athletics, a person who throws a javelin is called a "javelin thrower". Collins Dictionary has an entry for "javelin thrower":

(athletics) a person who throws a javelin

There is the word "javelinier" (or "javelineer"), but apparently that is only used for non-athletic purposes. Wikitionary defines "javelinier" as:

A soldier who throws a javelin

There used to be the word "jaculator", which is defined in The Century dictionary and cyclopedia (published in 1906) as "one who throws (a javelin)":

There is even an entry in dictionary.com which has the same definition for "jaculator", but I'm fairly certain that word isn't used...

The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in length, is thrown. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area. Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon.

The javelin was part of the pentathlon of the Ancient Olympic Games beginning in 708 BC, in two disciplines, distance and target throw. The javelin was thrown with the aid of a thong, called ankyle wound around the middle of the shaft. Athletes would hold the javelin by the thong and when the javelin was released this thong unwound giving the javelin a spiraled flight.

Throwing javelin-like poles into targets was revived in Germany and Sweden in the early 1870s. In Sweden, these poles developed into the modern javelin, and throwing them for distance became a common event there and in Finland in the 1880s. The rules continued to evolve over the next decades; originally,...

On Wednesday, Clay tweeted footage that showed him throwing a javelin that was attached to his daughter Ellie's lower front tooth. The tweet was immediately picked up by the Twitter community, receiving over 1,600 retweets.

Clay later responded to concerned queries about the say Ellie had in the operation.

"Her brother and sister were telling her different ways and mum was too," he told BBC Trending. "Then someone came up with the idea of the javelin and the second she heard that, that's what she wanted to happen."

"I didn't want to do it. I was a little bit afraid of what people were going to think, what they were going to say, or that they would misunderstand and get a little upset."

Clay said that Ellie convinced him to go ahead with the procedure. "She absolutely loved it and kept asking me 'Please, please, please Daddy' until I gave in."

After the throw, the successfully extracted tooth remained attached to the javelin, which...

Javelin is a popular track and field sport that is present since the inception of mankind. In ancient days, people used to hunt animals using spear and so did the soldiers in the battlefield to kill their enemy. With the gradual evolution of mankind, the skill is transformed into a sports category and today, it is played by almost all nations over the globe.

The objective of Javelin Throw is to throw a spear-like structure (technically called as javelin) with your bare hands with maximum force so that it will land within a prescribed marking area. The game is played in both men’s and women’s category. Constant practise and ability of judging angle, speed and distance is needed to play this game efficiently.

Throwing of spear was used for many purposes like killing animals, fighting with enemies in a battle field etc. but the trace of it in the sport form can be made from ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC. Target throw and distance are...

Session Three of training for my decathlon-in-an-hour, and suddenly we've gone caveman.

This is a welcome move. There are insufficient opportunities for modern urban man to access his inner hairy ancestor, and the prospect of throwing a spear around a field had quickened the pulse all week.

Not that I've got much pedigree in the javelin. There was a brief lesson at school at the age of 12, but that mainly concerned how to carry one to the playing-fields without jabbing the bloke in front or behind you. Beyond that, it comes down to some monkeying around with garden canes in the long hot summer of '91 and the occasional launching of driftwood back into the sea on subsequent beach holidays.

Indeed, javelin once got me into considerable trouble at a Christmas dinner, when guests were taking it in turns to read out the jokes from inside their crackers.

"What do you call a bird that can lift heavy weights?" asked one old boy. I jumped to my feet, misjudging...

Tom:: Well today, I've turned up in the middle of a field, a park rather. It’s sunny, it’s windy, and I'm meeting up with my friend Mike Bumstead. Mike, why are we here in this field today and why are there some long darts on the ground?

Mike - Well, we’re going to learn about spear throwers today.

Tom - Ahh, spear throwers. I see. Okay, so can you just describe what you've got in your hand for us please.

Mike - Well I have two pieces of the technology that we refer to as spear throwers: one which is Native American, central Native American in design and it’s an atlatl, something you would pronounce in a different way in this part of the world.

Tom - Okay, wait. So let’s just take a step back. We’ve got a spear thrower and then you use this word ‘atlatl.’ So, there's different names for this thing.

Mike - Yeah, there are. Basically, what it is is a long...

With its origins lost in murky pre-history, the javelin is a simple weapon. After all, it's a thrown stick with a pointy end that ruins someone's day. Despite this simplicity, it still requires skill and strength to use.

The Javelin is a throwable weapon for PAYDAY 2, introduced in Update #77 as part of the Gage Chivalry Pack DLC.

The Javelin is one of the most powerful throwables in the game with a damage rating of 3250, being able to one hit kill any unit aside from the Bulldozer on higher difficulties.

DLC owners spawn with three javelins, had they equipped it.

The javelins will stick to any surface that you throw it at, including enemies. They will also sometimes rebound off of surfaces and roll across the ground. They cannot be restocked from ammo bags or from dropped ammunition from enemies. Instead, players can pick them back up by moving over them. They can also be restored from the grenade case...

Showcasing his spear-throwing skills, one of the participants of a medieval reconstruction competition in Russia decided to get rid of a historically inconsistent device, launching his lance at a drone buzzing overhead.

The quadcopter had been hovering just three meters over the heads of the actors taking part in a battle scene called the “bridge fight,” when it was taken down with one precise throw.

“The lance was not a fighting weapon, it had a softened tip,” one of the organizers of the international festival of historical reconstruction Rusborg 2016, Pavel Semyonov, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta. “Therefore the quadcopter was not destroyed, it just dropped to the ground.”

While witnesses and social media users remain divided in their judgment of the incident, most voiced criticism over the destruction of someone’s property, and the “warrior” voluntarily compensated the owner of the drone for the damages.

Still some participants supported the lance...

Eighteen-year-old javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra became India’s second ever person to win a gold medal at an IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) world championship event. The competition, which was held in Poland, also saw the Panipat lad breaking the under-twenty world record by almost two metres!

Out of his three throws in the finals, the game changer was the second one. His first javelin throw was marked at a distance of 79.66 metres.

Neeraj threw a massive 86.48 metres the second time, leaving his competition in the dust.

South African Johan Gobler won the silver medal with a throw of 80.59, while Anderson Peters of Granada took home the bronze.

To put his achievement into perspective, Neeraj’s throw makes him the eighth best among all throwers this season, and first among the junior throwers.

One of the oldest weapons of all humanity, along with the

wooden clubs

, is the javelin. Short, light spears that can also be simple sharp sticks, Javelins differs from

Blade on a Stick

for many things: usually, while spears and lances are melee weapons associated to guards, soldiers, armies and-or cool-headed, calm individuals, javelins are different. They're weapons associated with speed, as its much lighter to carry than the spear.

Javelins are favored by

horse riders

who can use it instead of bows and arrows (javelins are much more economic to build and easier to use). Is also a very old weapon, so it's usually seen in the hands of wild, primitive looking cultures. If the work takes place in a sea setting then you'll probably see its water cousin, the harpoon. Another advantage is that a javelin is more likely to penetrate armor than an arrow thanks to its heavier weight.

Sometimes certain powerful characters won't be satisfied with...

Magic Weapons :: d20srd.org

Magic weapons have enhancement bonuses ranging from +1 to +5. They apply these bonuses to both attack and damage rolls when used in combat. All magic weapons are also masterwork weapons, but their masterwork bonus on attack rolls does not stack with their enhancement bonus on attack rolls.

Weapons come in two basic categories: melee and ranged. Some of the weapons listed as melee weapons can also be used as ranged weapons. In this case, their enhancement bonus applies to either type of attack.

In addition to an enhancement bonus, weapons may have special abilities. Special abilities count as additional bonuses for determining the market value of the item, but do not modify attack or damage bonuses (except where specifically noted). A single weapon cannot have a modified bonus (enhancement bonus plus special ability bonus equivalents) higher than +10. A weapon with a special ability must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus.
