Dog Training Equipment Definitions and Vocabulary.

Lately i have been seeing some confusion about various pieces of training equipment and thought it would be nice to have an easy way for people to know which is which and what they are called. this will make things easier when talking with other dog people about equipment. for example an electronic collar remote being referred to as a “clicker” may make sense to the person using it but to many other people it will mean a reward marker clicker that makes an audible click when pressed, you can see how quickly this can get confusing in conversation.

This is a pinch collar, sometimes referred to as a prong collar. When pulled on it causes a pinching sensation to the dog in order to discourage a behavior.

These are a couple of slip collars, also known as a choke chain or choker.

These are both called clickers. They are used for reward marker training to let the dog know when she has...

Lynx Grips: Our Most Versatile Piece of Training Equipment

Written on April 26, 2010 at 4:56 am, by Eric Cressey

Back in 2006, Indiana Pacers Strength and Conditioning Coach Shawn Windle told me about a new piece of training equipment and connected me with the company that made it. A week or so later, my first pair of Lynx Grips arrived in the mail – and I’ve been using them extensively ever since. In fact, I found Lynx Grips to be so versatile that when the opportunity to buy a small portion of the company arose, I wrote a check immediately.

Originally, the grips were positioned as a better alternative than lifting gloves, especially for females who didn’t want to develop “man hands” from lifting heavy stuff. They certainly prevent the issue completely. My fiancee loves them – and actually refers to them as her “tacos.”

The more I used them, though, the more I realized that we could integrate them in our strength and conditioning...

Hojo Undo Training

An essential part of Okinawan Karate practice is the use of hojo undo (supplementary training) equipment. This includes the makiwara (wrapped punching board), which is the main piece of training equipment in most Okinawan Karate Dojo. Other common pieces of equipment are the Nigiri-game (gripping jars), Chi-Ishi (power stones), Ishi-Sashi (stone padlocks), and Tetsu-Geta (iron sandals). The use of this training equipment conditions and strengthens the practitioner to specifically perform the techniques of Karate in a much stronger fashion. In addition the increased musculature and tendon strength gained from this training provides a type of “armoring”, or additional protection, over many of the vital points found along the limbs...

Cross trainer equipment varies depending on what the user's primary sport is. A runner will have a different variety of cross trainer equipment at his disposal than a cyclist will, since the point of cross training is to do exercises outside the normal routine of the primary sport. A runner, for example, might use an exercise bike as his cross trainer equipment choice to work the leg muscles while using a different, low-impact motion. A cyclist, however, may choose an elliptical machine as his cross trainer equipment choice because it will allow him to get a good cardiovascular workout without throwing a leg over the bike.

The elliptical machine is often called cross trainer equipment, yet it is not the only device to be used for cross training. An elliptical machine is a great piece of machinery to use for cross training purposes for all athletes, though, so the nickname is perhaps rightfully earned. This machine simulates a walking or running motion, but it does so by...

There is a huge variety of circuit training equipment that is in use nowadays compared to that which was available when circuit training was first designed.

Circuit training is widely used in many sports to develop general fitness. Nevertheless, if you have been participating in your sport for any length of time, and you are still doing those same routines, your body will become accustomed to the same exercise stimulus. When this happens, your body will cease adapting to training.

Circuit Training Equipment

So, how can you practice the circuit training methodology yet provide the variety of stimulus that keeps the body adapting to change? Well, a simple change of a single piece of circuit training equipment is sometimes all that is required to force the body to adapt differently.

The type of training equipment you choose will depend largely on your training objectives, space and to some extent the budget you have at your disposal. With...

Everyone would love to be able to buy just one piece of weight training equipment and have it meet all their fitness needs. The only problem is, that piece of equipment really doesn’t exist…at least not for less than $14,572 (have you ever seen that stupid contraption that they sell in all the onflight airplane magazines?!).

I definitely wouldn’t recommend spending this type of money on something that looks like a trap out of the “SAW” movies, so we’re forced to look for alternatives.

That said, the Perfect Pushup was one of the most solid entries into this competition a couple of years ago and still is hanging on as one of the top favorites of all home exercisers. But is it worth it?!?

Well, to be honest while the little device is certainly portable, unique and effective…it does have it’s limitations. You definitely couldn’t order one of these and think you’re getting a complete workout.

What about the legs? What about the...

Note: This is part two in a series of strength training from NF Team Member Staci. Check out part one, which goes over the reasons why you should start strength training.

I have a confession to make.

When I first decided I was going to start lifting, I was scared to death of the weight section of the gym. For weeks before I even walked near it, I did what any rebel would do: I started researching like crazy. I talked to my fellow rebels on the Nerd Fitness message boards, I found tons of lifting videos on how to squat properly, watched them meticulously, and took notes like crazy.

I even bought a PVC pipe so I could practice at home in the mirror, so I wouldn’t look like an idiot at the gym.

The next day, I get to the gym, look around, and see the squat rack. It was empty. Sweet! I walked over, noted that the rack looked a little different than the ones in the videos, but everything else looked right: the barbell, weights, safeties, check. So I went with...

The Focusmaster G-1000 has a number of benefits when compared to a traditional heavy bag or Muay Thai bag. The Focusmaster G-1000 is more versatile, takes up less space, safer for the user, and differentiates you from all of the other gyms that just have heavy bags. The G-1000 allows for any of our targets to be locked-in to the mainframe at any height or angle. This gives the user an endless amount of target configurations and striking combinations for people of any height. When wall mounted, the Focusmaster G-1000 sits just 4 inches from the wall and when fully equipped with targets, extends less than 30 inches from the wall. Unlike heavy bags, our equipment lines your walls to take full advantage of unused space within your gym. Our product is much safer than the heavy bag because our targets lock in at eight different angles. This allows the spring target to be set up at the correct angle for the appropriate strike. You will quickly notice this when you try to throw an uppercut...
