Who was the youngest player to play in an NHL game?

I am currently compiling a list of player portraits and 3D Model heads that will work in NHL Legacy Edition for the PS3. I do not have an Xbox 360, so I do not know if this list will work on that platform.

Here is what I have so far:

Player Likeness with Portrait and 3D Model Head
281 - Forsberg, Peter
321 - Grier, Mike
430 - Kariya, Paul
468 - Kovalev, Alex

Dylan Strome is living his NHL dream playing for the Arizona Coyotes, staying in a hotel and avoiding the harsh Pennsylvania winter he endured the past three years playing for the Ontario Hockey League's Erie Otters.

He just doesn't know how long it will last.

Strome was the No. 3 overall pick in 2015 and he is in hockey's version of purgatory: At 19, he is eligible to be sent back to the juniors without burning a year of his contract as long as he doesn't play 10 games.

In the NFL and NBA, when you're drafted, you're in, and Major League Baseball prospects almost always start in the minors.

NHL teams, however, get the chance to test-run some of their top young prospects before committing to them for a full season.

"No one feels bad for you," Strome said. "It's not really up to me. Obviously I want to be in the NHL."

In the same uncertain spot are Coyotes teammates Jakob Chychrun and Lawson Crouse and others around the league, from the New...

Sidney Patrick Crosby Order of Nova Scotia (born August 7, 1987) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Crosby was drafted by the Penguins out of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) first overall after earning back-to-back CHL Player of the Year awards and leading his club to a berth in the 2005 Memorial Cup during his two-year major junior career with the Rimouski...

This is part of VICE Sports' 2016 NHL preview coverage. You can read all our stories here.

It feels like we may be nearing a changing of the guard in the NHL. The Sidney Crosby/Alexander Ovechkin generation continues to dominate, as it has for most of the last decade. But there's growing excitement over the next wave, one highlighted by the success of Team North America at the recent World Cup, and we're already getting a strong sense of what the future looks like.

So today, let's identify some of the most exciting young players in the league who'll be 21 or under as of opening night. (This isn't meant to be a comprehensive list of every good young prospect in the league, but just to save everyone time: If I left out your personal favorite player, it's because I hate them.) We'll look at what they are now, and what they might end up becoming. And we'll also look at their odds of actually reaching the top tier.

That last one may seem a bit odd—most...

Panthers, Jackets meet in Florida

Columbus Blue Jackets at Florida Panthers

Since the 2005-06 season, the Blue Jackets are 12-3-1 (.781) against the Panthers, their best record against any opponent during this time. The Panthers have one power-play goal over their last 21 power-play opportunities. Since November 10, Florida's power-play percentage is 4.8%, second lowest in the NHL during this time (Devils -- 4.3%). Roberto Luongo started the season 3-5-0, but has gone 4-1-0 over his last five games. Over these last five games, Luongo has a 1.97 GAA and a .938 save percentage. In six career games against the Blue Jackets, Vincent Trocheck has three goals and an assist. Over his last six games this season, Trocheck has five assists.

SUNRISE, Fla. -- They both have distinctive hairstyles, they are both considered old for their careers, but dare we say that right winger Jaromir Jagr has overcome long odds even more times than right winger Donald Trump.

Here are three players who have seen a big time stock rise over the first 20 games of the season, and three players who have seen their stock drop.

It’s Thanksgiving weekend in America and with it comes the unofficial end to the first quarter of the season. The standings are still wacky, and so are some of the scoring leaders, but it’s far enough into the season where what we see now is close to what we’ll get in the future.

There have been some incredible performances to start the season so far and that’s really pushed the stock of certain players up. The same can be said for the guys on the opposite end of the spectrum, who have been miserable and see their stock falling.

We wanted to highlight those two extremes. Guys who see their stock rise and fall is typical hockey lexicon, but rarely do you see it quantified, mostly because it’s generally difficult to quantify a player’s total value at any given point.

During the pre-season we used a statistical...

Team Breakdown:

Strengths: The Arizona Coyotes struggled once again in 2014-15, but made the most of the situation, collecting young players and draft picks in exchange for veteran players in five separate trades with playoff-bound teams. Those moves have already begun to pay dividends as rookie Anthony Duclair, acquired as part of a multi-player deal with the New York Rangers in March, is among the team’s leading scorers. Max Domi, a first round pick in 2013, is the team’s leading scorer and is one of 14 highly-skilled forward prospects the Coyotes have selected in the first three rounds since 2012. As those players continue to work their way up the ranks, Arizona could be one of the league’s more potent offensive teams.

Weaknesses: While no team has more high-end forward prospects, things are less certain when it comes to defensemen and goalies. Former first-round pick Brandon Gormley never reached the potential envisioned with the Coyotes and was subsequently traded to...

Yesterday, Todd McLellan confirmed the Oilers will indeed have a captain for the upcoming season and Connor McDavid seems like the obvious choice. McDavid turned 19 years young on January 13th. He will be 19 years and 273 days old when the season begins on October 12th. If he is captain on opening night he'll surpass Gabriel Landeskog as the youngest captain in NHL history.

Landeskog was 19 years and 286 days when he was named captain in Colorado. Sidney Crosby was 19 years and 297 days with Pittsburgh and Vinny Lecavalier was 19 years and 315 days when Tampa Bay handed him the captaincy.

Handing the captaincy to a teenager has had mixed results.

Crosby was named captain in May, but he didn't wear the "C" in a game until October. He had played two NHL seasons before they gave him the "C", and Crosby was clearly the Penguins best player and ready for the challenge. The Penguins had lost out in the first round in his second NHL season and they...

Connor McDavid became the youngest captain in the history of the National Hockey League on Wednesday, when the Edmonton Oilers anointed their young superstar with that franchise’s captaincy.

Now the question begs, can McDavid live up to the mantle recently held by the best player in the game, Sidney Crosby?

At 19 years and 266 days, McDavid surpasses Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog (19 years, 286 days) as the youngest captain in NHL history. Landeskog inherited that honour from Crosby, who had been 11 days older when Pittsburgh put the C on jersey No. 87.

The knighting of McDavid has been a poorly kept secret in Edmonton, where management assured fans at the end of last season that the team would name a captain this autumn. As McDavid clearly cemented himself as the best player on the team — and was subsequently named a World Cup captain of Team North America, a team run by Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli and coached by...

This is a list of career achievements by Wayne Gretzky in the National Hockey League. Upon his retirement on 18 April 1999, Gretzky held or shared 61 National Hockey League records. These records include 40 regular season, 15 playoff, and six All-star records.

Gretzky set impressive records in both regular season and post-season play, holding the record for most career regular season goals (894), assists (1,963), points (2,857), and hat tricks (50). The next closest player in total points for the regular season is sometime teammate Mark Messier at 1,887—thus Gretzky had more career assists than any other player has total points. Gretzky's point total including regular season and playoffs stands at an imposing 3,239.

His 47 playoff points in 1985 and 31 assists in 1988 are still records for a single post-season round, and he holds the record for career playoff goals (122), assists (260), points (382), hat tricks (10), and game-winning goals (24).

MONTREAL, Quebec -- There he was, the next face of the Toronto Maple Leafs, standing and answering questions in the Montreal Canadiens' home dressing room underneath the black-and-white photos of Canadiens legends.

The photos of Hall of Famers wraps around the Montreal dressing room. Just above Auston Matthews hung pictures of all-timers Henri Richard, Gump Worsley, Yvan Cournoyer and Ken Dryden.

Yes, it's a little strange that the Maple Leafs' No. 1 pick is getting his first major exposure to the NHL world while setting up shop in the heart of the Bell Centre. At one point, he mentioned how excited he was to play in Toronto, the center of the hockey world, to which a Montreal reporter suggested that it might not be wise for him to repeat that too loudly in this town.

"Yeah, well, I guess you could argue it," he said with a shrug.

It's a nontraditional start to an NHL career, but for Matthews, that's just about right. After all, this is the guy who...

“Hey, John, can we talk for a second?”

I guess I should have known.

But I have absolutely no idea what’s coming.

I’m in the weight room, hanging out with the guys, when my GM asks me to take a walk. I’ve been gone for a couple of days — but now I’m back in Phoenix, at the Coyotes practice facility, catching up with the boys. We’re getting some stretches in, and passing around my new gloves.

My All-Star gloves.

I’ve seen my name in the news, on the press release, on the official rosters. But even still: there’s just something about gear, you know? I, John Scott, from Michigan Tech, at 33 years old … have All-Star gloves.

The guys are all genuinely happy for me, and they’re letting me know it. They’re giving me some crap about it, too (of course), but it’s all in good fun. Everyone’s taking their turn, trying my gloves on. We’re laughing. It’s a cool moment.

As this is happening, I see our GM open the door.

He’s not...
