Why did Mumbai Indians get an extra delivery to win with a better run rate?

This is it from this game. What an enthralling one we had. My fingers still bleed from the action we saw (read I typed). But I am not complaining even a little bit. Hopefully we see a similar one tomorrow. Meet us for that game, till then have fun. This is Akshay Maanay signing off on behalf of Ramakrishnan and our scorer Venkatesh. Goodnight!

Brathwaite: "Yeah, when I spoke to Dwayne, he told me he was gonna bowl a slower ball. I am backing you, but in my head I am thinking, 'slower ball?'. Yeah, Bravo is a champion. He always steps up. Never shies away from the challenge. Kudos to the curator for preparing such a wicket. Even the outfield is brilliant as well. Lewis was told at the last moment that he was in the team. It was a tremendous effort. If we talk about criticism myself and the lower order did not finish the game. We could have got to 250-60 Thanks to the USA for support. We are...

The Delhi Daredevils squaring off against the Mumbai Indians in the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Both team's performance has been poles apart. Mumbai Indians have mostly been topping the table and Delhi Daredevils have been stationed at the bottom.

Mumbai Indians have been playing as a cohesive unit and has great match winners. The bowling attack comprising of Malinga, Harbhajan & Patel are capable of removing the top players and putting the opposition under pressure. On the contrary, Delhi Daredevil's too much dependence on the openers Sehwag and Warner is well known to all other teams and has been exploited by them to maximum. The Daredevil's were...

Mumbai's 'Man of all Seasons' Abhishek Nayar once again brought his best out in pressure situation to guide the defending champions to the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy beating Hyderabad by 30 runs in a closely-contested last-eight encounter.

Needing 232 to win, Hyderabad were dismissed for 201 on the final day as Nayar and left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil (5/64) doing the damage.

Top-order batsman Balachander Aniruddh's dogged unbeaten 84 off 187 balls with four boundaries and two sixes was not enough with senior-most pro Nayar's 5 for 40 enabling the title favourites to survive a scare despite being in the pole position going into the final day.

All the three wickets were taken by the veteran all-rounder who finished with match figures of 9 for 100 and also scored a half-century once again proving that who has been Mumbai's most effective match-winner for a decade now.

Starting the day at 121 for 7 needing another 111 runs to win, Hyderabad with their No...

Kane Williamson stroked his sixth Twenty20 international fifty to guide his side to a nervy six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first match of their three-game series at McLean Park in Napier .

Williamson (73 not out) combined with Colin de Grandhomme (41 not out) in an 81-run partnership after the hosts had been teetering at 62 for four in the 11th over, chasing a victory target of 142.

Mahmudullah, who failed to fire in the one day series with scores of 0, 1 and 3, held together the visitors’ below-par innings of 141 for eight with his third Twenty20 international half-century.

Kane Williamson scored his sixth Twenty20 international fifty Kane Williamson’s 73* is his highest score in Twenty20 Internationals Bangladesh have never defeated New Zealand in a Twenty20 International

While Williamson and de Grandhomme looked in control of achieving the target as the overs ticked down, they did not really seal it until they took 17 runs from the 16th over...

Ishant Sharma got the openers out, Mitchell Marsh picked up the crucial wicket of Jos Buttler, the rest of the bowlers did their business and easy as pie the Rising Pune Supergiants picked up their first win in IPL history with a nine-wicket beating of the Mumbai Indians.

On a two-paced wicket, the RPS bowlers, asked to field by the home team, destroyed the Mumbai Indians top order in this IPL 2016 opening match, to quieten the Wankhede crowd. While Harbhajan Singh played a typically-Harbhajan 45 from 30 balls (7x4, 1x6) to take the score to 121/8, the Rising Pune Supergiants, led by their openers Faf Du Plessis and Ajinkya Rahane made the chase look easy, getting to the target with 5.2 overs to spare.

The chase was always going to be comfortable if RPS got off to a solid start at the top, and Rahane and Du Plessis gave them just that.

There was a little bit of luck in the first couple of overs, with an outside edge off Rahane flying to the third man boundary,...

Ashish Nehra produced a sensational spell of pace bowling after Shikhar Dhawan shone with the bat with a scintillating unbeaten 82 as Sunrisers Hyderabad spanked Mumbai Indians by 85 runs in a lopsided IPL match here on Saturday.

Sunrisers posted a challenging 177 for three with opener Dhawan remaining not out on 82 off 57 balls, studded with 10 fours and a six, after being put into bat and then senior pacer Nehra (3/15) triggered a Mumbai top-order batting collapse with a 12-ball spell of thee wickets to help the home side notch up an easy win.

Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who has been in brilliant touch this season, also scalped three wickets for 16 runs as he cleaned up the Mumbai lower order.

With the win, their sixth in nine matches, the Sunrisers have now 12 points. Mumbai have 10 points from 10 matches.

Mumbai made a disastrous start in their run chase as they were reduced to 30 for five inside five overs with Nehra scalping three...

And so, England go back, series drawn 1-1 after losing the first game. India fail to win the series, and with that a chance to go on top of the World T20 rankings. The Test series went England's way, honours have been shared in the T20s here and the stage is set for the grand finale in the ODI series, in January. That will be quite a contest now.

It was an England show all the way, to be honest, cruising along nicely in the chase. There was a brief blip in between, Yuvraj Singh almost winning it for India with the ball, but he did have only four overs, after all, and the other bowlers could not keep the English batsmen down. Jos Buttler came in late, but his 15 off seven balls made a lot of difference. Captain Morgan may have missed his half century but 26-ball-49 did it for England.

England win by six wickets, series tied 1-1

Over 20: England 181/4; Morgan 49 not out, Buttler 15 not out

How did match turned from Ambati Rayadu's dismal to Rahul Dravid's disappointment.
Here it is,

In the calculation of net run rate (NRR), the final score, and not the target, is the relevant number. For Mumbai Indians, the requirement to finish the chase in 87 deliveries was only subject to their final score being 190. The chasing team, if they take a few extra deliveries to get home, can still push their NRR up to the required fraction if they manage to achieve a final score that is sufficiently higher - by finishing things off with a boundary.

Mumbai Indians, despite failing to score that all-important extra run off 14.3, had already inched ahead of Rajasthan Royals' NRR when they had drawn level on 189. At that stage, Mumbai Indians' NRR read 0.078099, while Royals' was 0.076821. Had Mumbai Indians just run the single they needed for victory off the fourth ball, though, their NRR would have gone below that of Royals'.

Since they were using the extra ball, they...

Mumbai Indians 195 for 5 in 14.4 overs (Anderson 95*) beat Rajasthan Royals 189 for 4 (Samson 74, Nair 50) by five wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

The scenes at the Wankhede Stadium were scarcely believable as Mumbai Indians' turnaround of a campaign that had begun so disastrously culminated in the most fairy-tale of finishes. As Aditya Tare swung his first ball - James Faulkner's leg-stump full toss - over long leg to give Mumbai the boundary they needed to claw into the playoffs, Rahul Dravid rose from the dugout and flung his Rajasthan Royals cap to the ground as the team he was mentoring completed the most spectacular of meltdowns to lose an un-loseable game.

The shambles that caused Dravid to lose his temper would have broken less-composed men much sooner. Despite the mad-scientist experiments in their last few matches, Royals had gone into this game with a hand full of aces. Mumbai Indians, having decided to chase, needed...

RCB 151/4 (20 Ovs)

MI 153/4 (18.4 Ovs)

Mumbai Indians won by 6 wkts

So, the points table reads as: Mumbai Indians on 4th, Royal Challengers Bangalore placed sixth. The latter will have to win all their games now, and as Kohli said, he will savor the challenge. After the Vizag blip, Mumbai's recoil that saw RCB conquered at home was nothing short of stunning. Gayle's selection dilemma is something I will have an ear for. Till tomorrow, Shabba Khair from Pratyush Sinha on behalf of Sagar Chawla, Abhishek Chaudhary and Venkatesh, our scorer. Ta-ta!

Krunal: "Really happy the way I bowled. I was varying the pace and the wicket was on the slower side, so let the batsman guess as to what I was bowling. Bangalore is a heavy scoring ground but after bowling a few balls, I got the idea that varying pace here is key. When I was not playing IPL, my dream team was Mumbai. It's an honour to be a part and it feels good to contribute in whatever way I...

Hello and welcome to The Hindu's Live Commentary of the IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore taking place in Wankhede on Wednesday.

----------------------------------------------------

And that's it. Mumbai save some face by winning their first home game this season, before the IPL caravan leaves Maharashtra. This match was a bit of a roller-coaster when you think about it. First, Virat Kohli, K Rahul and AB de Villiers getting Royal Challengers Bangalore off to a flier — run-rate of 8.9 in the first 10 overs. Then Krunal Pandya happening to the match — the fifty-plus partnership between Kohli and ABD being cut short within the space of five balls in the same over. And for a while, the RCB batsmen looking all at sea. And then walked in the cleanest smoothest hitters ever — Head and Shoulders... I mean, Head and Sarfaraz.

The two men cracked the game open again with a 63-run partnership that kicked in in the 14th over and fell out...

Royal Challengers Bangalore have won the toss and they will bowl first

It is now confirmed that Chris Gayle will not play the match. He still has a sore back.

Michael Hussey and Aditya Tare will open for Mumbai

Four. Hussey has struck that through the off side for four

MI 8/0 after 1 over

Albie Morkel comes on to bowl

DROPPED! Virat Kohli has dropped Tare in the slips. That was quite easy.

Tare drives, gets a quick single. The IPL bugle sounds and the crowd cheer. I wonder why that tune is still so popular after 7 years.

Good outswinger to Hussey, he let it go at the last moment

Tucked away by Hussey for no run

Another sharp single on the off side

MI 10/0 after 2 overs

Hussey advances down the track but misses that outswinger from Mitchell Starc

Whadda cover drive! Perfect head position and Hussey steers that through cover and point for four

Wrong line, picked away through square leg...
